Would Xbox 360 Live may cost double?

“I don’t foresee a scenario where we’re going to double the price of LIVE any time in the next couple months”

You may have heard rumblings around the net that Microsoft's Xbox 360 LIVE monthly and yearly subscription may double in price in the next few years. Videogame analyst/financial/inside guru Michael Pachter suggested the company's $50 Xbox LIVE membership fee, which players pay to access special features, could double in the next couple years.

Michael Pachter was quoted: "You can't hook a guy into Xbox LIVE Gold if he's playing on a PC," said Pachter. "That's the other problem. You really want to hook every gamer who has a 360, you want them to buy all their games on 360, play everything multiplayer, pay $50 a year, so that in a couple of years, it's $100 a year. That's going up, we all know that."

Microsoft’s spokesman David Dennis made some very interesting comments in a post-NPD conference call. The man with two first names David Dennis states: "I don't foresee a scenario where we're going to double the price of LIVE anytime in the next couple months," said Dennis.

According to that statement, it's feasible that a price increase for Xbox 360 LIVE can happen as early as the first of next year. The fact the Dennis mentions the next couple of months makes me think, he either misspoke and meant a couple of years or he knows something that he is not telling.

To throw my two cents into the pot--with the advent of 1080p HD Streaming arriving on Xbox 360 in the near future there has to be a huge cost associated with such a feature. Sony is currently making a killing charging a premium for Blu-ray movies. I can see Microsoft increasing the cost of LIVE to cover the cost of 1080p streaming and at the same time adding a premium value to their service. It makes sense for Microsoft to go this route--plus many will still pay to play. Microsoft logic behind such a feat would be "why not", we have an establish game library and everyone that owns a 360 has a pretty sizable friend list. We have Games on Demand, 1080p HD streaming, Facebook, Tweeter and Netflix. Why wouldn't someone pay a $100.00($8.33 per month) a year to access these premium features?

I would not pay a $100.00 a year to play with friends would you?

Microsoft Bricks Unauthorized XBox 360 Storage Devices

Microsoft's Major Nelson has issue a warning that next week's XBox 360 update will see the blocking of unauthorized storage devices such as the XBox 360 Memory Unit 512MB or XBox 360 Max Memory Card 2GB. This makes no fucking sense Microsoft, I currently used my Xbox 360 Memory Unit to store my profile and game saves just in case I happen to go to a friends house.

    Major Nelson states:
"When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360.

If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to “back it up,” you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update.

If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games."
I do not understand this move and the purpose of it, will try to contact Microsoft for details.

Microsoft: Sony PS3 Sales will never catch up 'For Entire Generation'

Microsoft: Xbox 360 Will Outsell PS3 'For Entire Generation'

Let the shit-talking begin: Microsoft Xbox 360 director of product management Aaron Greenberg threw some serious blows(more like an Haaadooouken)in an interview with Game Informer, calling Sony's anticipated leading September PS3 sales "a short term bump."

"It is not a real concern to us," said Greenberg, acknowledging the likelihood of Sony's top slot sales numbers and adding "This is frankly not a real surprise to us or the analysts that follow this industry."

"What I can tell you is we remain confident that Xbox 360 will not only outsell PS3 for the full calendar year, but for this entire generation. It is similar to a game of baseball, it is not about just winning one inning, but instead being able to win the game by consistently delivering across all nine innings."

Microsoft has had a very strong performance over the past three quarters--it's the only console with year-over-year unit increases in a bad economy--it would indeed take an act of God for Sony to pull ahead in annual sales by the year's close. But as Greenberg says, it's the big picture that matters, and for the moment, Microsoft owns US sales by a unit ratio of roughly 2 to 1

There is one statement that Aaron Greenberg makes that really bugs me, Greenberg states: that success comes down to "much more than just hardware sales...it's about the entire ecosystem and investing in the future." Which is true but Sony has been investing in their gaming future ever since December 2004 and Nintendo a lot longer. Microsoft venture into Gaming is still relatively short compared to Sony and Nintendo. Sony may never catch up to Xbox 360 but they will slowly chop away at Microsoft 360 lead.

Unreal The "Unofficial Engine" Of Project Natal?

Epic Games, the champion of Microsoft and the creators of all things Unreal plus Gears of War is officially on board with Microsoft's game changing control scheme "Project Natal." VP Mark Rein calls the company's popular Unreal tech "the unofficial engine of Natal."

In an interview with OXM UK, Rein says he also considers Unreal the "economic engine of Natal," the platform upon which developers should go to if they "want to get a big headstart and use the same tech as Microsoft."

Rein also says that, going forward, don't be surprised if you see Natal's motion and voice detection control schemes in future Epic Games titles.

"I have no idea what we're going to do from a game standpoint, but from an engine standpoint, it's definitely cool stuff, and we will support it," he says. "I think any future Xbox games we make will have some Natal support."

PS3 is top selling console in September -- for first time ever?

EEDAR's analyst Jesse Divnich predicts 400,000 PS3s were sold in September, edging out both Wii and Xbox 360 sales (375k and 370k units respectively) .Wedbush Morgan mega game analyst Michael Pachter has also published his September video game sales preview for the US market.

Pachter estimates PS3 console sales of 410,000 units, a 76 per cent increase year-over-year. This should be enough to topple both the Wii (390,000 units) and Microsoft's Xbox 360 (350,000 units).

"We believe that the recent round of price cuts may benefit the PS3 the most in coming months, given that unit sales last year were only 1.5 million for the September -- December 2008 period," claimed the handsome man. "The Xbox 360 has outsold the PS3 for the past 13 months, likely due to a higher perceived value proposition.

"We think that the PS3 will outsell the Xbox 360 in September, and may continue to do so for the rest of the year. Microsoft has the ability to lower price yet again, but we anticipate the introduction of a more feature-packed Xbox 360 in early 2010 (likely with a 250Gb hard drive) at the same $299 price point; we think that Microsoft will cut price only if it begins to lose significant market share to Sony."

Turn 10 responds to Forza III graphics

The demo of Forza Motorsport 3 was released on September 24th for the Xbox Live Marketplace. While having the potential to be a huge hit when released, many are still complaining about the games graphics.

Che Chou, the community manager of Turn 10, was kind enough to address some of the concerns across multiple game forums.

Here is his response to a claim that the in-game graphics of Forza Motorsport 3 are different than the ones found in photomode:

"One clarification about photomode and screenshots we've released so far. Aside from the added effects such as AA, DOF, and motion blur, all assets you see in photomode are the same although I do stand corrected on one factor which is the player car. They do have higher detail in photomode while all other cars, the environments, etc. are exactly what you see in game. And as you know in replays everything is the same. Anyway, did not mean to mislead or 'play dumb' with earlier statements as I misunderstood how LODs were being used in the various modes. That said, many of the screenshots we've released thus far have used the in-game graphics car models since we often shoot a scene including cars that aren't the player car. It all looks good and representative of the game, imo

The demo is visually representative of the full-game so racing in-game won't look much different.

I don't see that many jaggies on my multiple TVs at home and at work, but everyone's setups can be varied.

I guess that's the thing. Overall, when I'm racing around the track, my eyes are not bleeding. I am a fairly big graphics ***. I love taking photos in photomode. Games with bad graphics distract me from my experience. That said, when I play FM3, I do not think about how awful the graphics are or low in-game car models, etc. simply because the overall effect is that the game looks good. Can it look better? Yes, totally and I agree it is not perfect. But does it justify the vitriol of some of the threads I've scanned this morning? I'm not sure that it does. Everyone has their own opinion on the matter and that's fine and there's not much I can say except I hope you'll give the final game a chance and have fun with it."

Aaron Greenberg: Sales boost from price cuts will last "a month or two"

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg does not expect recent price cuts for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to leave a lasting impression on the console sales race.

"I don't believe the price cuts that both companies have made will impact the market dynamics too dramatically in the long term," Greenberg, who is director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, told our sister site Eurogamer in an interview published today.

"We typically see a month or two of lifts and share adjustments, but then things tend to settle back to roughly the established market ranking."

HD 3D Sony's PS3 Secret weapon Part II

If you ask any fanboy who is the "victor" this current console war many would proclaim the Nintendo Wii as the new 'champ' with the Xbox 360 a close second and PS3 feeling like a redhead step child.

Nintendo brought motion control (MoCo) to the masses and made it relevant amongst game designers and grandmothers, Xbox 360 introduced a unified and seem-less way to play online with a community of your top 100 friends. Sony on the other hand--introduced an expensive super HD Blu-ray player that actually play games that no one seem to get right.

Sony has unleashed a foray of never before seen R&D videos showing what they have been stealthily cooking up in their labs. We saw a very interesting super zoom feature for the PS3, Sony unveiled advance facial recognition with head tracking for the PS3, Sony also demo'd a new voice recognition library for the PS3, dubbed PS3VR which is currently featured in SingStar, and most importantly Sony showed off WipeoutHD 3D in spectacular true 3D HD.

Sony is currently lagging behind it's major competitors in terms of sales, with the recent introduction of the PS3 Slim has helped close the gap. Sony needs to do something big to change the playing field and prove their relevance to the gaming world and most importantly the public.

Sony's secret weapon that will help change the tide will be the advancement of 3D viewing technology in our living rooms. With most major Movie Studios going 3D and many movie theaters revamping their screens to digital 3D. The next logical step in the world of 3D would be to bring 3D to our living rooms.

With Blu-ray being Sony's Trojan horse, Blu-ray will be the Trojan horse for 3D eventually arrival into our living rooms. Sony announced a few weeks at IFA 2009 it is to bring out a 3D series of its Bravia TVs in 2010, marking the first time the company has brought 3D technology to its TV range.

"Incorporating frame sequential display and active-shutter glass systems, Sony's proprietary high frame rate technology will enable the reproduction of full High Definition high-quality 3D images, and will form the centerpiece of Sony's 3D entertainment experience for the home," reads Sony's IFA release.

In addition, to 3D Bravias, Sony is also set to introduce and "develop 3D compatibility into many more of its devices, such as Blu-ray Disc products, Vaio and PlayStation 3, to provide a multitude of ways in which 3D content can be enjoyed in the home - from 3D movies to stereoscopic 3D games."

Specialist 3D games developer, Andrew Oliver, founder and CEO of Blitz Games told TechRadar:

"At IFA this week the big news is going to be 3D! Several companies will be showing their new 3DTVs, which is really exciting and having been privileged enough to have seen some of the prototypes, they really do produce exceptional results. 3DTV not only gives you the high resolution of HDTV, but also allows you to look into the worlds with a far greater level of immersion. 3DTV will soon be the new HDTV."

Sony also launched a new branding strategy at IFA 2009 – with its "'make.believe' philosophy" signifying the company's ability to "turn ideas into reality", with lots of talk at the IFA conference of 'synergies' and 'leveraging resources' in order to help promote 3D in the home.

    Wii Shovelware expanding to PS3?

There is one thing we know for sure ever since the Nintendo Wii debut it brought with it an avalanche of shovelware-- games made on the cheap and released half ass to make a quick buck.

With Sony's new Motion Control(MoCo) arriving this coming Spring 2010 and Natal in the Fall 2010, Capcom has chimed in on the potential of seeing some Wii games ported to the PS3.

"Speaking to other developers in Japan," Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi tells game site 1UP, "I've heard a few of them say they were delighted by the Sony motion controller because they can just port over their Wii titles to the PS3."

Multiplatform ports for the PS3 has been a hit or miss affair. But we can all assure that you cannot fuck up a Nintendo Wii port? Or can you?

DJ Hero's DJ AM Found Dead in New York

DJ AM, a playable character in Activision's forthcoming DJ Hero, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment Friday.

Adam Goldstein, as he was known in real life, was a performer with a well-known history of drug addiction, and recovery from it. He was 36.

Tim Riley, the Activision vice president of music affairs, released a brief statement on word of Goldstein's death: "We are deeply saddened by the loss of DJ AM. We hope that his work on the game will be a fitting tribute to his creative spirit and musical talent."

So it doesn't sound like the tragic development changes anything about DJ AM's appearance in the game, due for release Oct. 27.

The Associated Press reported that police found prescription medications and a crack pipe in Goldstein's apartment in New York. Paramedics discovered him shirtless and wearing sweatpants in his bed at 5:20 p.m. on Friday. A friend had called police, alarmed that he was unable to get into the home. There was no evidence of foul play.

Next Generation Gaming Engines Part 2 "Euphoria"

Lucas Arts is back, and just in time for the next generation video game war. Back in the hay day the 1990s Lucas Arts had its sheer of IPs with great technology. But as time past Lucas Arts decided to stick with their aging IPs. But a new light has began to shine, and with the sheer brightest of that light comes new and amazing technology.

One of those games that will be shining its light bright is STAR WARs: The Force Unleashed. And with this new IP comes a waterfall of technology that will be changing the way we play games from this point on.

    Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

The Star Wars saga will continue in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, a video game developed by LucasArts, which casts players as Darth Vader's "Secret Apprentice" and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The expansive story, created under direction from George Lucas, is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.

As its name implies, The Force Unleashed completely re-imagines the scope and scale of the Force by taking full advantage of newly developed technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time: Digital Molecular Matter (DMM), by Pixelux Entertainment, and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. Paired with the powerful Havok Physics™ system, these new technologies create gameplay only possible on the new generation of consoles. DMM incorporates the physical properties of anything in the environment so that everything reacts exactly like it should - wood breaks like wood, glass shatters like glass, plants on the planet Felucia bend like plants on the planet Felucia would, and more. Meanwhile, as a revolutionary behavioral-simulation engine, euphoria enables interactive characters to move, act and even think like actual human beings, adapting their behavior on the fly and resulting in a different payoff every single time.

    Features

-During the period between Episodes III and IV, players hunt Jedi in the role of Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice.
-Unleash and upgrade the Secret Apprentice's four core Force powers
    - Force push, grip, repulse and lightning - throughout the course of the game, and combine them for ultra-destructive, never-before-seen combos.
-Examples of unleashing the Force in ways never thought possible:
-The Secret Apprentice won't just Force push enemies into walls - he'll Force push enemies through walls.
-The Secret Apprentice won't just Force grip foes to throw them aside - he'll Force grip them in midair, zap them with lightning, then drop them to the ground to explode like a bomb.
-In addition to new adversaries created just for the game, such as fugitive Jedi and Force-sensitive Felucians, players will also confront and associate with familiar faces from the Star Wars films, including Darth Vader.
-Visit locations such as Episode III's Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk and the floral Felucia, the junk planet Raxus Prime, plus an Imperial TIE fighter construction facility.
-Decisions made by players throughout the game will determine the path of the story, including multiple endings that will rock Star Wars continuity as they know it.
-The Force Unleashed is LucasArts' first internally developed title for next-generation consoles, and it represents the first in-game collaboration of talents and technology between LucasArts and Industrial Light & Magic, two companies now finally under one roof at the new Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco's Presidio district.
-The Force Unleashed debuts Digital Molecular Matter from Pixelux and euphoria behavioral simulation from NaturalMotion Ltd.
-LucasArts is preparing an unprecedented promotional effort around the launch of The Force Unleashed, encompassing a full line of toys and game-based action figures from Hasbro, as well as a full publishing program from Dark Horse, Del Rey and Palace Press.

Now lets get to the meat and potatoes, the two most interesting things that will make this game absolutely amazing is the Digital Molecular Matter from Pixelux and the Euphria Behavioral simulation from NaturalMotion.

    Digital Molecular Matter from Pixelux:

Digital Molecular Matter (DMM), automatically generates art assets for a broad range of animation sequences: objects breaking, objects bending, flesh moving, cloth and rope motion, etc. Using DMM does not force artists to change their tools. The output of tools such as Maya and LightWave can be imported and converted to DMM objects. Instead of using a surface description of a video game objects, DMM uses a volumetric representation. A surface mesh is extracted from the volumetric representation at the desired level of detail for display. True 3D procedural textures can be used to add detail for display and as part of the material strength evaluation process. Data structures are also extracted to make collision detection and contact evaluation very fast. Even special effects sounds are synthesized automatically from fracture, contact, and collisions of DMM objects

    Real-Time
The CPU, vector units and GPU are all used to accelerate the DMM extractions, texture processing, and simulation. DMM technology has been designed to take advantage of the latest advances in computing technology, including multiprocessing and physics acceleration hardware. Our goal is to make this technology real-time for the sake of both interactivity as well as in-game use.

    Destructibility
Digital Molecular Matter technology can handle more than just realistic motion. DMM can simulate the fracture of objects. The physical stress throughout objects is calculated and is used along with the strength of its materials to decide when and how objects will break. Complete fracture is simulated including the creation of separate pieces, which become additional bodies in the environment.

    Flexible Bodies
DMM can also handle much more than rigid bodies; it can simulate the action of flexible bodies as well. DMM objects can bend, like a metal pole bending or a branch of a tree. The movement of flesh of people and animals can also be simulated. This allows an animation sequence to be applied to a rigid body skeleton and then have DMM flesh attached to the skeleton to create a video game character that moves realistically. Cloth and rope motion can also be simulated with DMM, making it possible to have a realistic sailboat simulation with wind filling the sails realistically.

    Automatic Level Of Detail (LOD)
Because we store a volumetric archetype format of the object, DMM objects are not limited by mesh control point limitations when attempting to decimate meshes for different levels of detail. Each LOD version is built by traversing the DMM data structure to whatever level of detail is desired. This yields a natural tessellation of the final surface mesh that is just as accurate or much so than a hand-drawn one.

    Physics
While DMM is designed to be modular, we cannot ignore that there may be some environments lacking in a physics engine. To this end, we have designed our own physics engine with state-of-the-art algorithms. This engine is based in part on some of the principals utilized in our fracture system.

    Hardware Shaders
Modern graphics hardware has some interesting features that are not always utilized to their best effect. One of these is the concept of a 3D shader. A 3D shader defines a volume that is shaded rather than just a surface. DMM technology can take advantage of this 3D nature by utilizing shaders in situations where objects are broken to show internal structure.
Here we see a chair. One made of marble and the other made of wood:

Video of what all that tech talk translates to:

    Euphoria
euphoria:core is NaturalMotion's lightweight DMS engine. euphoria:core runs parallel to the game's animation engine and is called by the game's AI whenever synthesised motion is required instead of canned animation. This enables a non-disruptive integration and scalable use.
euphoria:core consist of a small kernel, AI controller modules (for adaptive behaviours) and a rigid dynamics module (for physics). euphoria is physics-engine independent and works with all commercially available engines (as well as proprietary ones).
Just watch the video it is a lot easier to understand:

Euphoria & DMM in action. Star Wars: Force Unleashed
    game play.

They will be a few a games out there that will utilize Euphoria technology, such as GTAIV and 2K sports AllSports All Pro Football. Where this type of Technology will shine would be in sports where there is full contact, Football, Basketball, and even Soccer. Fighting games can be greatly enhance with the absence of canned animations. I am truly looking forward to see who picks up this technology and how it is used in future games. Lucas Arts I really do not have to worry about making poor IPs, its everyone else that scares me.

NEXT GEN GAMING: How Long would it Last

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter issues state-of-the-industry report, says PS3 will take this round of console wars, but everyone can come out a winner.

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter issued his annual industry report today, and used it to warn investors of what he expects to be a changing console generation model.
While he addressed everything from the mobile-gaming market to the profit potential of downloadable content in the 207-page report, Pachter's main point was that the current generation of consoles will stretch on longer than the five-year cycle established by previous generations.

Pachter titled the report "Curb Your Enthusiasm," warning investors that customers are buying into the new systems at a slower rate than expected. But on the positive side, longer console life cycles gives companies more of a chance to turn a substantial profit from their systems before turning around and pouring money into making the next system.
"In our view, the economics of game development and the tremendous capital required to produce the consoles will virtually compel all constituents to milk the next generation for all that it's worth," Pachter wrote.
Pachter singled out Sony as one player looking to take advantage of a longer console cycle. The electronics giant has already said it wants a 10-year lifespan for its systems, and Pachter noted the delayed introduction of the PlayStation 3 and the company's willingness to include a Blu-ray drive in the machine. Pachter noted that Blu-ray might not be a compelling value-adding feature until (and unless) it beats Toshiba's HD-DVD format as the next-gen successor to DVDs.
"We expect the dominant console at the end of the next cycle to be the PS3, primarily due to our assessment that Sony will win the high-definition DVD format war," Pachter said.
However, Pachter doesn't expect that "dominance" to be especially convincing. Through 2011, he projects that the PS3 will have sold 73.7 million units worldwide, edging out the Wii's 72.4 million systems. Pachter has the Xbox 360 finishing third among the consoles with 54 million sold worldwide. But in this round of console wars, there may not be a loser.
"We believe that this is essentially a dead heat," Pachter said, "and each manufacturer will have sufficient market share to generate significant profits."

According to Pachter's projections, the PS3 will sell 32.2 million units in the US through 2011, followed by the Wii with 29.9 million, and the Xbox 360 with 26.8 million. That represents the first six years in which the PS3 and Wii were sold (seven years in the Xbox 360's case). For comparison's sake, Pachter's figures show that over the first six years during which the PS2 was sold, Sony managed to move 32.1 million systems in the US.
As for Nintendo's hit holiday launch of the Wii, Pachter appears unconvinced as to the system's long-term prospects.
"We believe that the Wii will outsell its competitors by a large margin for at least two years, but have difficulty predicting whether Wii demand will remain strong or will fade thereafter," Pachter said. "We think that Nintendo is likely to tinker with its hardware some time in the foreseeable future, perhaps offering high definition graphics and a Blu-ray drive in a future version of the console. Should it fail to do so, we think that the other two consoles will become far more competitive as prices come down."
On the Xbox 360's upside, Pachter noted that a misstep by the competition could help, but isn't necessary for Microsoft to emerge from this generation better off than it was going in. If the HD-DVD format (which Microsoft has embraced with an external drive for the 360) manages to best Blu-ray, Pachter said it would be a "complete disaster" for Sony, and completely negate the value proposition of the PS3's Blu-ray drive.

"Microsoft can position itself to thrive in either case, and has in large part secured a more dominant position this time around through its decision to launch the Xbox 360 a full year ahead of the PS3 launch," Pachter said.
Moving to the portable console wars, Pachter noted that media coverage of the PlayStation Portable and DS is "fixated" on the sales battle between the two to the point that people have a distorted view of each machine's success.
"The phenomenal performance of the DS has made the PSP’s performance appear poor, when in fact, the PSP is actually performing quite well," Pachter wrote. "By the end of its third full year, we expect the PSP’s installed base to be approximately 25 million units, on par with the installed base of the Game Boy Advance at the end of its second year. Given that the PSP started from scratch, while the GBA sold into an installed base of over 100 million Game Boy owners, we think that the PSP’s performance is respectable."
Of the DS, Pachter said, "We consider the DS one of the primary reasons to expect the next generation console cycle to be the biggest ever."

The analyst expects Nintendo's dual-screen handheld to sell a whopping 97.9 million systems worldwide through 2011. According to Pachter's projections, 6 million of those will be sold in the US in 2007, helping the year's domestic hardware sales total more than $7.5 billion. However, Pachter expects that number--slightly less than the US hardware sales tally of 2005 and 2006 combined--to be driven more by the larger price tags on the latest systems.
"We are impressed that the console manufacturers, video game publishers and retailers seem to have learned in some small way from the same mistakes that they made in the past," Pachter concluded. "Even if they don’t make the same mistakes as in the past, there will be ample opportunity to make new ones: the first mistake of the current cycle was Microsoft’s decision to launch a console in 2005 without adequate supply; the second was Sony’s decision to include a costly Blu-ray drive in the PS3, driving the cost of the console beyond the reach of many consumers and limiting supply at launch; the third, surprisingly, was Nintendo’s failure to anticipate demand for the Wii (we all missed this one), a problem that persists as of the time of this writing."
