Resistance 3 Invading PS3 Soon

Insomniac Games, one of the premiere developers in the industry--looks like they are planning Sgt. Nathan Hale's, third tour on the PS3. Insomniac Games has had a great and celebrated start on one of the most complex gaming systems in the world. They were able to create the current masterpieces Resistance 1 & 2 and the much loved Ratchet and Clank series for the PS3.

The billboard was spotted by forum user “goldsoundz” from the site NeoGAF, who went on to say:

“I saw this billboard today in Shreveport, Louisiana. There are a lot of movies filmed here, and this one is about some sort of alien takeover of Los Angeles; the name of the film escapes me at the moment. Snapped off a few photos of the billboard since I wasn’t sure if the game had been announced yet or not. If not, then I’m surprised Insomniac would be announcing it here of all places.”

Do not know the legitimacy of the Billboard and Sony has not officially announce anything but it's not inconceivable with the recent surge in sales for the PS3 Slim(and if you had a chance to play Resistance 2 the ending points to a Resistance 3). And Ratchet and Clank:A Crack in Time scheduled for an October 27th release.

Insomniac Games would not just sit around Bo-jangling with 2010 shaping up to be very important year for Sony--with great franchise releases planed, for example: God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, FFXIII, Team ICO's new Project, The Agent just to name a few. Why not throw Resistance 3 into the mixed just chalk this up as a rumor for now now stay tune to Video Gamer's Heaven for more information.

TDK Unveils New 320GB 10-Layer Blu-ray Disc

TDK has recently announce a new 10-layer Blu-ray disc capable of 320GB of storage in development. Can you say epic games!

According to TDK: “It is possible to write and read data on and from the disc by using a blue-violet semiconductor laser with an oscillation wavelength of 405nm and an objective lens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.85, which are currently used for the Blu-ray disc.”

This has been a trend in newer, higher-capacity Blu-Ray discs. Due to the spread of high speed Internet connections everywhere and firmware being written to non-volatile (update-able) chips, it means that our PlayStation 3 consoles may simply be a firmware update away from reading these 10-layer behemoths of Blu-ray discs in theory.

HD 3D Sony's PS3 Secret weapon Part II

If you ask any fanboy who is the "victor" this current console war many would proclaim the Nintendo Wii as the new 'champ' with the Xbox 360 a close second and PS3 feeling like a redhead step child.

Nintendo brought motion control (MoCo) to the masses and made it relevant amongst game designers and grandmothers, Xbox 360 introduced a unified and seem-less way to play online with a community of your top 100 friends. Sony on the other hand--introduced an expensive super HD Blu-ray player that actually play games that no one seem to get right.

Sony has unleashed a foray of never before seen R&D videos showing what they have been stealthily cooking up in their labs. We saw a very interesting super zoom feature for the PS3, Sony unveiled advance facial recognition with head tracking for the PS3, Sony also demo'd a new voice recognition library for the PS3, dubbed PS3VR which is currently featured in SingStar, and most importantly Sony showed off WipeoutHD 3D in spectacular true 3D HD.

Sony is currently lagging behind it's major competitors in terms of sales, with the recent introduction of the PS3 Slim has helped close the gap. Sony needs to do something big to change the playing field and prove their relevance to the gaming world and most importantly the public.

Sony's secret weapon that will help change the tide will be the advancement of 3D viewing technology in our living rooms. With most major Movie Studios going 3D and many movie theaters revamping their screens to digital 3D. The next logical step in the world of 3D would be to bring 3D to our living rooms.

With Blu-ray being Sony's Trojan horse, Blu-ray will be the Trojan horse for 3D eventually arrival into our living rooms. Sony announced a few weeks at IFA 2009 it is to bring out a 3D series of its Bravia TVs in 2010, marking the first time the company has brought 3D technology to its TV range.

"Incorporating frame sequential display and active-shutter glass systems, Sony's proprietary high frame rate technology will enable the reproduction of full High Definition high-quality 3D images, and will form the centerpiece of Sony's 3D entertainment experience for the home," reads Sony's IFA release.

In addition, to 3D Bravias, Sony is also set to introduce and "develop 3D compatibility into many more of its devices, such as Blu-ray Disc products, Vaio and PlayStation 3, to provide a multitude of ways in which 3D content can be enjoyed in the home - from 3D movies to stereoscopic 3D games."

Specialist 3D games developer, Andrew Oliver, founder and CEO of Blitz Games told TechRadar:

"At IFA this week the big news is going to be 3D! Several companies will be showing their new 3DTVs, which is really exciting and having been privileged enough to have seen some of the prototypes, they really do produce exceptional results. 3DTV not only gives you the high resolution of HDTV, but also allows you to look into the worlds with a far greater level of immersion. 3DTV will soon be the new HDTV."

Sony also launched a new branding strategy at IFA 2009 – with its "'make.believe' philosophy" signifying the company's ability to "turn ideas into reality", with lots of talk at the IFA conference of 'synergies' and 'leveraging resources' in order to help promote 3D in the home.

3D Sony PS3 games by 2010

According to NanoGeekTech3D, Sony will be pushing the boundaries of 3D to the mass public by the end of 2010. Sony is planning to releasing Bravia 3D LCD displays, Vaio 3D desktop and laptops and most importantly 3D Sony PS3 games.

Sony revealed its 3-D plans on the eve of IFA 2009 in Berlin, Germany, Wednesday.
Sony is jumping on the 3-D train early, capturing the latest entertainment trend fueled by a host of 3-D movies to hit theaters recently. Sony's 3-D push also comes as the number of 3-D movie screens explodes. Research from Screen Digest indicates that the number of 3-D movie screens worldwide will hit 7,000 by the end of 2009.

Sony said the 3-D-compatible Bravia LCD TV will use frame sequential display and active-shutter glass systems along with Sony's own high frame rate technology to reproduce full "High Definition 2" quality 3-D images. The televisions will be the centerpiece of Sony's 3-D dreams, the company said.

3D is making a serious charge into our homes and it's beginning in a movie theater near you. Sony has been teasing us with the prospect of 3D games since CES 2009 with an amazing 3D presentation of Wipeout HD.

Speaking at the IFA technology trade show in Berlin, Sir Howard Stringer, Sony chief executive, will announce plans not only to sell 3D Bravia television sets, but to make Sony’s Vaio laptop computers, PlayStation3 games consoles and Blu-ray disc players compatible with the technology.

Did firmware 3.0 have any secret 3D upgrade?

Burnout Paradise in 3D on the PS3 coming soon?

Some of you may not know this but at the current moment Burnout Paradise can be played in 3D and has had a test run in 3D using tech firm NVIDIA's GeForce 3D graphics card and glasses. Doug McConkey of Criterion Games says he was unsure of how advanced the game would be but was very impressed by this early technology.

Sony's PS3 is a 3D beast in hiding, all Sony has to do is push a button aka "firmware update". With the recent showing of Motorstrom and Wipeout in full HD 3D this past CES 2009, Sony already knows the value of going all 3D. When Sony goes 3D this will in theory be the deciding factor that may help propel Sony PS3 sales.

In the March Edition of Qore. Eagle-eyed PSI forum member "jaxmkii" points out that during the interview with the developers of Burnout Paradise featured in this month's edition of the online PlayStation magazine, the interviewer can be seen playing the game while the screen's image is doubled as if it were displaying an image meant to be seen with 3D glasses, which she happens to be wearing.

Kobe Byrant, Tiger Woods, and Tom Bardy are pretty damn good at their respective sport. They have not done anything revolutionary to change their sport, some athletes out there can be debated as arguably better, and they are some people how really do not like them. KillZone 2 is the Bryant, Woods and Brady of FPS this current generation. Guerrilla Games KillZone 2 is damn good at what it does, nothing revolutionary was done to change the genre, some FPS could be debated as being better, and then they are people, out there that would not see how much of a special experience KillZone 2 has to offer.

KillZone 2 is not without it's flaws, I'll will vent my frustration about this later. I have only played KillZone: Liberation for PSP and that was a demo. Having no knowledge about the KillZone universe will not impend your comprehension of the sub par plot.

KillZone 2 begins two years after the Helghast assault on Vekta. The ISA is taking the fight to the enemy's home world of Helghan with the ultimate goal of capturing Helghast Leader, Emperor Visari, and putting a halt to the war machine called the Helghast. The first thing that will strike your retinas like an HD rainbow collage being beam directly into your pupils are KillZone's 2 graphic. KillZone 2 in a sense, is just like every other FPS out there with a few major tweaks, and the first being pushing the graphic bar on all FPS on current generation consoles. You have to see KZ2 in motion to appreciate the beauty and grace, death can bring.

Many Wii owners out there may shout at the top of their lungs "graphics is not the end all be all", but that is the main reason Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo( I think they took a step backwards) "con us" I mean persuade us into purchasing a new system every five to seven years is due to graphics. Graphic matter and KillZone 2 proprietary game engine really show off the potential of the PS3 as a graphic powerhouse with no equal this generation.

One of the most impressive aspects of KillZone 2 is the animation and killer AI(some of the best I have to date). There is not too many games that do death and destruction as gracefully as KillZone 2. As you scorch the the Helghast with your flamethrower or nail them to the nearest object, it's a brutal and painful reality that drives the ugliness of war in the Halghast universe. If you like dishing out pain, you standard weapons will be making an appearance in KillZone 2. You will have your trusty pistol, Assault Rifles, sniper Rifles, Heavy Machineguns, Shotgun, VC1 Flamethrower, VC5 Electricity Gun and the VC21 Boltgun. My issue with KillZone 2, in the weapon department is the ability to carry only two weapons. I want the ability to carry any two weapons for example, a sniper rifle and a Flamethrower. The fact that you are always stuck with your trusty pistol does add a level of panic but it would have been nice to have a choice with my devices of death.

KillZone 2 supports full 1080i and 720p resolution and most importantly some of the best 7.1 Dolby digital in the industry. The score to Killzone 2 was composed by Joris de Man, who scored 60 minutes of in-game music and 30-minutes of live orchestral score for the game, recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, with the Nimrod Studio Orchestra. The orchestral score is epic, it enhances the overall sense of chaos, war and tragedy, especially if you play with high end headphones, which I did for the most part of the game.

The controls for KillZone 2 plays a little different form the norm. As you guide your protagonist Sergeant Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko through his personal nightmare against the Helghast. You will notice the weight of his armor and weapon in his movements. If you run with your pistol versus your rocket launcher you will notice a slight change in your speed. The controls for KillZone 2 is tight, smooth and very responsive. My only complaint about the controls would be, when you are running around for your life and you need to pick a weapon up, you have to directly stop over the weapon hold square for about a second before you can pick your new weapon up. This sucks, especially towards the end of KillZone 2, I'll would rather have the ability when I run over a weapon press square I pick it up automatically akin to the Call of Duty series there should be no delay.

KillZone 2 single player campaign is a epic battle for survival what gives this shooter legs is its fantastic online play, a fun and competitive extravaganza that issues a constant stream of benefits. Like the most recent Call of Duty games, Killzone 2 rewards you with bonuses as you play, which in this case can mean new weapons, extra grenades awarded upon respawning, and most intriguingly, entire classes. This is done not only via a leveling system that pushes you ever closer to the next reward, but also with ribbons earned by completing specific tasks, such as getting a certain percentage of your team's kills. These bonuses are earned separately from leveling, which makes for two layers of online play enhancements to keep you ever addicted.

The modes themselves offer few surprises, what with variants on Team Deathmatch (Bodycount), Conquest (Capture and Hold), and Capture the Flag (Search and Retrieve), among others. Rather, matches are unique because these modes are strung seamlessly together, forcing teams to move from one objective to the next with barely a breather in-between. Up to five modes mesh into a single game, which keeps teams on their toes and spreads hotbeds of action about the maps. In a single match, you're likely to band with teammates in an exposed courtyard, navigate tight walkways as battles rage in the artificial gully just beyond, and defend an objective in a claustrophobic alcove. It's unlikely that you'll have trouble finding players online to join you in one of Killzone 2's 32-player engagements, but should you be so inclined, you can fill out the games that you host with up to 15 AI-controlled bots. You can even practice offline in one-off matches with those same bots if you prefer.

The eight maps included are exceptional, largely because they are flexible enough to make every mode feel like a natural fit for the precise layouts. Aspects such as the varying spawn points of the propaganda speaker in Search and Retrieve, and the vulnerable locations of capture points in Capture and Hold, provide focused hot spots and send you to every nook and cranny of the maps. Be prepared to think vertically because the pathways wind up stairwells, through hidden tunnels, and across balconies walkways. The addition of techniques available to each of Killzone 2's seven classes makes the ensuing action even more dynamic. An engineer's turrets can make Pyrrhus Rise's natural chokepoints even more treacherous, whereas a cloaked enemy may pounce on you as you navigate Tharsis Depot's constricted walkways. All the while, visual flourishes such as floating embers on Visari Hammer and distant artillery fire on Salamun Market keep the mood oppressive.

Guerrilla Games Killzone 2 is a clinic in FPS that will defiantly help usher in a new kind of immersion. But KillZone 2 is not without it's flaws. My biggest let down with Killzone 2 is the lack of any online or offline co-op game play. Any sort of co-op gameplay in KillZone 2 would have launched KillZone 2 to heights that no other FPS would have been able to follow. As you play on Veteran or Elite, it's evident that co-op would help with the Halghast relentless pursuit of your demise.

Guerrilla Games has some work cut out for KillZone 3 especially with it's rough narrative. KillZone 2 is an excellent, chaotic and brutal FPS, it does not do anything revolutionary or even new. What KillZone 2 does is provide one of the best console gaming experience offline and online and graphical superiority that has garner the attention of the competition. Most importantly KillZone 2 is a reason to be proud to be a PS3 owner.

Graphics: A+

KillZone 2 is the best looking shooter so far this early generation. From fluid death animations, to amazing lighting, and particle effects. Guerrilla Games has created a brilliantly realized immersive environment to stimulate all your sense

Sound: A+
Sporting the best 7.1 HD audio in the business, KillZone 2 epic score, thunderous explosions and piercing gun play helps enhance the battle for survival on enemy home turf.

Replay Value: A+
MP will keep you playing for months or until KillZone 3 comes out. One of the great features of KZ2 is the ability to track your stats, from online to offline. Beside seeing where you stand around the globe there seems to be an endless array of online unlockables.

Control: A

If you've played FPS you can handle KillZone the control scheme is a little different, but the more you play the more it feels very natural. Weight is translated very well when running and gunning for your life.

Fun Factor: A +
From single player campaign to online with up to 32 players KillZone 2 is pure fun. If KillZone 2 had co-op online and offline, it will surpass the realm of fun.

NanoGeekTech Overall Score: A+
The hype is for real, KillZone 2 is an extremely great ride that every PS3 owner should experience. Leading the way with superior graphics, ear melting sound track while
pushing the boundaries of the FPS experience.

Should you buy it or rent. Both, if you cannot afford to purchase KillZone 2 than go out and rent it at your local Blockbuster, if you can afford it, KillZone 2 is a worth while title to add to your PS3 library.

'Skate 2' (PS3/X360) Features 3D Mode

According to TeamXbox, if you want enable the 3D mode in Skate 2, then go to the "Extras" option in the menu, type "strangeloops". You will be able to experience 3D effect with old fashion 3D glasses(red and blue). Skate 2 could be the first 3D game in this generation using the red/green anaglyph format, versus Stereoscopic 3D what Sony will be unleashing in the near future.

Bad Economy! Well you need a PS3

The current economic outlook does not look too good for many. With unemployment reaching levels not seen in decades, the DJIA falling faster than a TV child star career and every other house on your block on the verge of foreclosure. Why not invest in a Sony PS3. It may sound like the most ass backward move you can make when the world is on an economic meltdown of global proportions. But, I will try to outline the logic and reason for investing $399.99 plus tax in a Sony PS3 in such murky economic times.

If you are a gamer, casual or hardcore a PS3 should be considered as your console of choice. They are currently two cheaper alternatives besides the PS3 but as a gamer the PS3 is the one you should focus on. Sony has recently confirm MAG, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain and God of War III will be here before year end. If you are the impatience type KillZone 2 will be here in four days, StreetFighter IV has officially hit store shelves, and Infamous will be here just in time for the spring bloom.

Beside a great core of AAA exclusives here in the US and overseas in Japan, you have the ability to access your PSN all for free. Now, I understand you have to pay for broadband which can cost at least $50.00 a month. But, with such a rough economy you will not have to pay to play on your Sony PS3. You will not have to pay to access premium full game contents on the PSN. You will not pay to DL any movie of choice and store it on your HDD. You will not pay to use HOME as a meeting place to conduct business, casual social encounters or getting with friends to play a game of Warhawk.

It can cost you up to $9.75 per person to attend a movie, add popcorn candy and soft drinks you can easily spend sixty plus dollars. If you own a PS3 you can say "to hell with the movies" rent a blu-ray, DVD or if you are a little adventurous DL a movie to your PC and copy it to your PS3 HDD. You can also visit Hulu/YouTube/NewsFilter and many other site to view television shows, movies or porn online all for free. If by chance you have a Sony PSP you have a portable video player on the go. All your media content on your PS3 can be access by your PSP anywhere around the world as long as there is a Wifi connection. Did I mention this is done all for free?

Now say you hate movies and do not plan to buy, rent, or stream any movies to your shiny new PS3. And your idea of any games consist of two rocks, one egg and a donkey named Eddie. The PS3 still oozes with value. You can use your PS3 as a cheap PC alternative to browse the Internet, check the weather, read sports, or just kill time. Life with PlayStation will help feed your appetite for global news and weather and at the same time teach your young lings some geography or maybe yourself. If having unlimited access to the world news all for free does not float your boat you can help contribute to the Control of Membrane Fusion Mechanism by Lipid Composition: Predictions from Ensemble Molecular Dynamics(WTF) by using Sony Folding@home. With your new PS3, even if you are not a lover of movies and games you can still be well informed about the world events and weather while helping scientist of the world solves gods riddles.

Ok, if you do not like playing God, can't stand blu-rays(hurt your eyes), would shoot mother nature if you had a chance and thinks world events is chronicling of an impending doomsday. Do not worry there is still more shit you can do with your Sony PS3. You can display your photos all in glorious HD to your adoring friends or family members. With the addition of the new Gallery feature for the PSN, that helps you sort your pictures by smiles, age and many other random criteria. You can make your very own custom themes for your PS3.

So with 3d Blu-ray and 3D gaming on the horizon, AAA exclusives like Killzone 2, God of War III, Heavy Rain, MAG and inFamous due out this year, built in Wifi, upgradable HDD, free PSN, B/C older models, PSP connectivity, Movie storage and purchase on your HDD, Full premium games on PSN for purchase(no need to visit the local Wal-mart anymore),Life with PlayStation, the new PSN Gallery, HOME, Folding@home, free to play with friends online and the ability to talk to anyone around the world for free. Let's not forget a very will built reliable machine that will last you years. So what are you waiting for, head to your local pawn shop(best way to get old PS3 unit with B/C) or BestBuy and pick up a PS3 do your part to help stimulate the economy!

Customers Set the 3D Record Straight: Gaming Rules

Press Release:
Customers Set the 3D Record Straight: Gaming Rules
Meant to be Seen Finalizes Results of U-DECIDE Initiative, More Than Triples Performance

Toronto, Ontario - January 6th, 2009 – Meant to Be Seen, the foremost authority group on stereoscopic 3D (S-3D) gaming and home entertainment has announced the completion of the U-DECIDE Initiative, the most credible study of what customers think of 3D entertainment technologies and why. Neil Schneider will be present at the Consumer Electronics Show, and meetings can be scheduled through MTBS’ press contact listed below. A brief synopsis of the additional contents of the U-DECIDE Initiative report will be made available at iZ3D Inc’s meeting room #25118M in the Gaming Showcase downstairs, South Hall 2, Las Vegas Convention Center.

“While CES is going to be filled with a lot of ideas and wishes for the 3D industry, dreams can only be made into reality if demand can be demonstrated. We now have the smoking gun to accomplish this from the only people whose opinion matters – our industry’s customers,” said Neil Schneider, President & CEO of Meant to be Seen.

Stereoscopic 3D refers to the ability to display true volumetric 3D content through 2D media. Examples include explosions that pop out of the screen, and a sense of depth that makes viewers think they can reach inside the display.

Made possible with the assistance of AMD, iZ3D, Blitz Games Studios, The Game Creators and Guild Software, the U-DECIDE final report will determine what customers think of 3D entertainment, and will dispel the leading myths and assumptions about the technology.

Customer opinions were captured in two separate online surveys. One was for traditional gamers who don’t yet own 3D display equipment, and the other was for experienced stereoscopic 3D gamers and consumers. Each respondent was required to answer 26 multipart questions, and there were well over seven hundred surveys completed (60% 2D, 40% S-3D gamers).

A staggering 65% of 2D respondents find 3D “intriguing” and 27% more say 3D is “must have” technology. Less than 4% think 3D is “tacky”, and just over 5% think it “sounds uncomfortable” – very low compared to what is often assumed of consumers.

3D glasses are regularly cited as a handicap to the at-home 3D market, yet only 12% of 2D customers object to 3D glasses for video games – content that is widely available today. This climbs to almost 30% for 3D broadcast television, with Blu-ray movies falling in-between with 16% glasses objection. Experienced 3D customers are more forgiving with just a 3% objection level for video games, 4% for Blu-ray, and 12% for broadcast television.

All respondents were nearly unanimous about video games with an 87% suitability rating by 2D, and nearly 96% rating by experienced 3D gamers. Without yet owning the technology for themselves, 93% of 2D customers want game developers to officially support true 3D in their games, and this climbs to 99% amongst 3D gamers. Suitability of 3D Blu-ray movies and 3D broadcasts were far more selective, and an in-depth analysis will be found in the final report.

Other findings include brand awareness of twenty different products/companies in the 3D marketplace according to both 2D and S-3D gamers. For example, the awareness range for products with 2D gamers was 4% to 54%, and Meant to be Seen scored over 40% amongst 2D gamers. This climbed to over 60% amongst S-3D gamers in a possible range of 8% to 68%.

Leading brands surveyed include iZ3D, NVIDIA, Mitsubishi, Samsung, RealD, Dolby 3D, DDD, Philips, Texas Instruments, Viewsonic and more.

“This is a bombshell. First, the game developers are only now waking up to the possibilities of 3D and the manufacturers are disproportionately spending their resources on the home 3D cinema market. Second, there is clearly a disconnect between what customers think and what many believe they think. And third, the content makers are weighing their futures on distant glasses-free technologies that consumers aren’t asking for. It’s clear that the sooner we all listen to our customers, the better,” Schneider explained.

Nearly 60 participant winners have been drawn for a wide selection of prizes including iZ3D 3D monitors, ATI GPUs, and a wide selection of video games by Blitz Games Studios, The Game Creators, and Guild Software.

Graphics charts are available for download from mtbs3D.com in the U-DECIDE sub-menu, and the complete report is expected to be available for distribution on January 26th, 2009.

Committed MTBS partners and qualified game developers who accept complementary MTBS Certification can get the report for free. There will be a 5% discount to MTBS members (free registration), and interested parties can email udecide@mtbs3D.com for more information on the report’s contents and pricing. This release is a small sampling of what has been learned.

MTBS is pleased to report that 2008 was a record year with its monthly traffic growing almost 360% in less than 12 months, and more than doubling its registered membership in the same period.

Non-proprietary and independently owned and operated, Meant to be Seen is made possible by unrestricted education grants from iZ3D Inc. and TDVision Corp. Non-proprietary in nature, MTBS welcomes additional industry involvement to help grow the popularity and effective use of consumer stereoscopic 3D technologies.

Sony alongside with RealD 3D, Avid, 3alitydigital, Pace, IMAX, NEC, Virtual Images and Dolby 3D are making huge strides with 3D cinema technology. Sony has recently released a Single-projector 3D adaptor for Sony 4K Projector late last year. Sony's new adaptor uses the full height of Sony’s 4K imaging device, with the ability to display full 2K images for the left and right eye simultaneously and in parallel, from top and bottom.

So what does this have to do with the Sony PS3? The PS3 is a modern day version of the Trojan horse. What do I mean you ponder? Will as you can see Sony has a heavily invested interest in Blu-ray technology even though sales of Video Games eclipse DVD/Blu-ray in 2008. According to reports, Blu-ray sales will see an increase of double the sales in 2009. For 3D movies to make the transition from movie theaters to our living room, the technology needs to be in place.

Currently they are over 19+ million PS3 owners with access to a blu-ray player burning current in homes all across the world. With 3D movies adding additional cost to overall production the movies studios need to make their money back. At this year CES 2009, 3D was the rave most importantly 3D HD Television displays.

With 3D Television sets already on the market and building steam. Blu-ray is one of the only media storage device that will help usher in 3D movies in our living rooms. They are currently 29 big budget 3D movies slated for 2009-2011.

In December 2008, Pioneer Corporation unveiled a 400 GB Blu-ray disc, which contains 16 data layers, 25 GB each, and will be compatible with current players after a firmware update(PS3). A planned launch is in the 2009-2010 time frame for ROM and 2010-2013 for rewritable discs. Ongoing development is under way to create a 1 TB Blu-ray disc as soon as 2013. Movies will capitalize on the massive storage space of Blu-ray at first and True HD 3D will be part of the process.

So lets review, Big Budget 3D movies are right around the corner(check), 3D television HD sets are on the market now and building steam(check), Blu-ray storage space will be increase just in time for big budget movies(check), and most importantly there is about 25+ million blu-ray players including Sony PS3 in homes around the globe(check).

Once 3D movies land on blu-ray, video games will only soon follow. Andrew Oliver Chief Technology Officer and Neil Schneider President & CEO of Blitz game Studios has confirm that Sony "Fully intends" to support stereoscopic 3d gaming and Blu-ray for the Sony PS3. According to Neil Schneider "The best part is console support will only need a bios to work, and we are told that the ability to add this capability via bios may be unique to Sony PS3 versus other console solutions". This is evidence that with a single firmware update Sony can make all PS3s True 3D HD players for movies and games.

Being that firmware update 3.0 will land sometime this year can we expect to see 3D in firmware 3.0?

What is Sony planning for firmware update 3.0?

First off, I would like to state I have no clue what Sony will be planning for the big "firmware update 3.0" but it would be interesting to let the speculation begin. I have been pondering this for a minute and it's an interesting position Sony could be in to make some game changing moves.

If you think about it, firmware update 3.0 in theory should be Sony's most defining evolution in it's hardware lifespan. Could be see 3D upgrade to watch Blu-ray movies in 3D a precursor to 3D games? As the economy continues it's rapid spiral towards "financial doomsday" Sony is feeling the pinch. Even though Blu-ray sales are doing good and Sony PS3 sales are still on a steady pace upwards, the PS3 gets it's ass kicked by the mainstream media and fanboies on a daily basis.

Going from King to pauper can be somewhat traumatic and sometimes tragic. Sony has to do something spectacular to garner some "ohhhs", "ahhhhhs" and most importantly increase interest in their brand. With KillZone2 right around the corner, and some great multi platform games within spitting distance 2009 looks like the year to unleash the beast with "firmware 3.0"
3.0 may arrive sometime this Fall of 2009 alongside the killer exclusive game lineup. I would love to see more game centric features added as part of firmware update 3.0, such as

-cross chat with friends.

-access the Internet browser while in game.

-PIP play game and or watch blu-ray at the same time.

-Customizable PSN interface. ie: make it easier to change icons, change start up sound form chime to your own music.

-Use my content on HDD or the PS3 Eyetoy to customize my PSN user icon.

-I will like to see a revamp PSN. Maybe integrated PSN into HOME ie: start your PS3 and it will greet you and you can also use your avatar to interact with start up menu.

-Access to any PS3 feature while in game without having to quit game.

-In game video chat using PIP

-Ability to play all video codec

-A better Adobe flash so I can listen to ESPN radio on my PS3

-Minority Report style interface with PSN start up menu.

No one knows for sure what Sony has planned for firmware update 3.0. There will be a great flood of hype and speculation about Sony's plans with "3.0". I'll have to say it will be interesting to see what Sony will do? Would they make a big deal out of 3.0 as a gaming changing aspect for the industry and the masses? Or would Sony do absolutely nothing and firmware 3.0 would just be released to help with the stability of the PS3. I believe there will be something game changing when firmware 3.0 is introduce how gaming changing only time and Sony will tell. What are your thoughts?

Video Games sales KO DVD/Blu-ray sales in 2008

Video Games outpaced DVD/Blu-ray sales for the first time on a global scale in 2008. According to, Media Control GfK international game sales grew 20% in 2008, to $32 billion. Combined DVD/Blu-ray sales fell 6%, to $29 billion. You can very well bet "your left whatever" that Nintendo had a great hand in the pawange of DVD/Blu-ray.

GfK is also reporting, that game software will grow to 12% this year, to about $36 billion, while DVD and Blu-ray combined will decline another 4%. I will have to say looking at Sony's list of exclusives in 2009 and the cash machine they called the "Wii". It only makes sense that software sales will grow in 2009.

Even though Blu-ray sales may seem like it may be suffering. Blu-ray sales will more than double in 2009 hitting $2.9 billion, according to GkK.

3D Gaming a Reality on Sony PS3 in 2009

Sony may need a serious lifeline if you ask some journalist around the web. Luckily thing I am not a journalist and second you'll have to find "NanoGeekTech". This year's 2009 CES has shown us and also proven there was only one prominent and important technology that counts in 2009 and beyond. It's the resurgence of "3D" in stunning crisp HD.

Sony with great foresight the set of balls of an iron clad Godzilla is at the helm of bringing 3D gaming to the masses. Sony teased attendies at this year CES 2009 with some of the most amazing HD 3D gaming videos ever shown in public. Sony has kept it quite "hush hush" in terms of how this was being accomplished.

Sony PS3 right now may look like a modern day child star going down the wrong path. They "rein king in the early days" now all grown up their shooting heroin, getting locked up for stupid shit while ensuring the our locals malls stay safe. Sony PS3 sales according to NPD is currently lagging in third place being the "other guys"but sales are up 40% prior to 2007. John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA proclaims the PS3 is still in the early adaptation mode. According to Koller "The PS3 is still in its early adopter phase, tech-oriented consumer … they’re interested in the multi-functionality of the system." This usually happen 12-18 months into a product life cycle it's been well over 24 months.

So far great news for Sony, but it's still cost a "whopping $399" for a PS3(sarcasm). Do not fret the price of the PS3 will drop "Sony expects to achieve profitability in this segment in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009" Just in time for April fools day, June 2009 or by August 2009 just in time for fall 2009 lineup.

You are probably thinking "WTF does all that have to do with Sony PS3 and 3D". HD 3D has officially emerge as a great "cash cow" for movie executives in Hollywood. The list of mega 3D blockbuster movies is continuing to grow at an ridiculous rate.

Here is a quick list of big budget 3D movies upcoming in 2009 and beyond:

-Robert Zemeckis' Christmas Carol (November 6th, 2009)
-James Cameron's Avatar (May 22nd, 2009)
-Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg Tintin (Unconfirmed 2009)
-Shrek Goes Fourth (May 21st, 2010)
-James Cameron's Battle Angel
-Final Destination 4 (Unconfirmed 2008)

The biggest selling tool these movies that cost well over a few billion dollars to be develop and distribute will be "3D". When 3D movies arrive on blu-ray how do these movies need to be enjoyed shit they better be in "3D". Many people give Sony the finger for adding a blu-ray functionality and jacking up to price to unreachable heights. In the upcoming years blu-ray will show it's true value as "3D" movies, gaming and television become more mainstream.

Every major electronic brand is jumping on the 3D TV bandwagon. At this year CES 2009 Panasonic set up a mini-home theater where its 103-inch, plasma 3D screen showed clips from New Line Cinema's Journey to the Center of the Earth and Walt Disney Pictures' animated film Bolt. 3D televisions will help usher in more 3D HD movies in the future and most importantly 3D blu-ray hardware and software. According to Panasonic's Suetsugi said "he is hopeful that a common standard for 3D Blu-ray hardware, software and TVs will emerge sometime this year, paving the way for 3D TV sales to pick up in 2010."

There's already 19.63 million PS3 out in the wild. In theory that's almost 20 million people with access to a pre-firmware update "3D" device. Sony needs to separate itself from the gaming herd beyond just "blu-ray". With the movies industry already changing the public perception about 3D and at the same time frementing excitiment. It only make sense for Sony to take 3D to the next step and apply it to HD gaming for their PS3.

I will speculate that Sony will have the ability to tap into the "Matrix" aka Sony PS3 and with the flip of the switch we will have the ability to play future Sony AAA exclusives in true HD 3D. There are some obvious flaws in my theory but for the moment lets overlook these flaws. If Sony can add 3D to the PS3 with a firmware update say "Fall 2009". Just in time for FFXIII fall 2009 debut in Japan, GOW III 2009 debut and GT5 spring of 2010 how will the competition react?

Now Sony can in theory flip a switch and we may have "3D" on our PS3, the question would be will there be a need for a 3D HD TV? This could be the case, to help sell 3D HD TVs. They are many issues involved to make 3D a reality. That being said there is an industry wide shift to make 3D a function of everyday media life. A company like Sony Corporation has the most to gain if 3D is wildly accepted. Sony makes the cameras to help shoot the movies in 3D, the future TVs, the blu-ray players, and most importantly the Trojan horse everyone calls the Sony PS3.

Sony teases with Amazing 3D Wipeout HD at CES 2009

Sony's first big splash at CES 2009 this year was a spectcular demo of Wipeout HD in 3D. NanoGeekTech reported Sony may be introducing 3D technology to a Sony PS3 near you soon may finally come to fruition.

Those luckily Ars Technicaians got a chance to witness Sony Spectacular 3D Technology Display on a PS3(speculation). According to Ben Kuchera at Ars Technica, "I couldn't pry details about how the 3D affect was achieved, or if the display could turn any source into 3D, but what's clear is that, glasses or no, the 3D affect is amazing. Sony showed off Wipeout HD running in true 3D, and I was ready to whip out my credit card right there. Frank and I both agreed, this was one of the best demos of 3D technology we have ever seen."

All I have to say is wow! I have recently played Wipeout HD and it's an amazing game. Its one of the prettiest things permanently stored in my subconscious for life. Many articles out there are declaring the death of Sony's technology Trojan horse the PS3 or the epic failure. If this 3D technology makes its way into the PS3 and is maximized alongside with the CELL processor, Sony would have to be decleared Crown Victor as first to bring true next generation HD 3D gaming technology to the masses "Game over".

3D Gaming a reality soon on a Sony PS3 near you

Andrew Oliver Chief Technology Officer and Neil Schneider President & CEO of Blitz game Studios has confirm that Sony "Fully intends" to support stereoscopic 3d gaming and Blu-ray for the Sony PS3.

From the looks of this new 3D technology this can be implemented through Sony's infamous firmware updates. According to MTBS3D "The best part is console support will only need a bios to work, and we are told that the ability to add this capability via bios may be unique to Sony PS3 versus other console solutions."

I hope we can see true 3D gaming fall 2009. Can you imagine your Sony AAA exclusives in 3D, how about God Of War III in 3D or the next Ratchet and Clank in 3D. Sony needs to distant itself form the competition and they need to do new and innovative things to build more value. And if 3D gaming can be a reality the value that the Sony PS3 has to offer will be super exceeded.
